先日、何かの折りに ceiling という単語が出てきて、同じ天井でもroofとは何かが違うんだろうなと思って英英辞典を開いてみたところです。

部屋の内側で上の部分。部屋の中に立って見上げたときに見えるのが ceiling ですね。

ビルや乗り物、テントなどを覆っている部分。
中にいる人を天候から守る・・なんていうこともコウビルドには書いてあります。
要は、建物などの外側の上の部分です。
なので、エレベーターで屋上のところに「R」と書いてありますが、これは roof のことですね。
以前、モンゴルに行ったときにゲルに泊まったのですが、ゲルを覆っている白い分厚い布は内側から見れば ceiling ですが、一歩外に出れば roof なのかもしれません。
広大なモンゴルでは、そんなのはどうでもいいことですが。
