今回のテーマは「敵」と「ライバル」です。
なんとなく違いがわかると思いますが、英英辞典ではどう書かれているのか、ちょっと見てみましょう。
まずは、「敵」から。

someone who you try to defeat in a competition, game, fight, or argument

In a sporting contest, your opponent is the person who is playing against you.

勝負事や戦いで打ち負かさなくてはいけない相手。
そのような相手であっても、ライバルって言うとちょっと違いますよね。
[rival]
a person, group, or organization that you compete with in sport, business, a fight etc
【ロングマン英英辞典 より】
Your rival is a person, business, or organization who you are competing or fighting against in the same area or for the same things.
【コウビルド英英辞典 より】
compete は「競う」ということですね。
決して打ち負かすばかりではありません。
お互いに競い合って勝ったり負けたり。で、両方がさらに成長してしまう。そんな相手がライバルです。
古くは星飛雄馬と花形満。
ケンシロウとラオウ。
でも「強敵」と書いて「とも」と読んだりすると、どっちやねん！と思いますね。
