ブルドーザーや戦車についているキャタピラ。どうしてキャタピラっていうのか、ちょっと見てみましょう。

キャタピラ自体は芋虫のことなのですね。確かにキャタピラは芋虫みたいですし、のろのろと進むあたりもそっくりです。このへんからキャタピラという名前になって、商標まで登録されたのでしょう。
ところで、この説明文でlike a wormと書かれているのがちょっと気になります。
wormは虫ですよね。その「虫のような生き物」と書かれているのですが、ということは、芋虫は虫じゃないのでしょうか。
そこでwormを見てみましょう。

こちらは脚が6本あるのですね。アリや蝶のような生き物がinsectです。
ですから脚がたくさんある芋虫はinsectではありませんし、かといってwormではありません。そこで、wormのような生き物ということになるのですね。
一応flyやbeetleを見てみましょう。

ちゃんとinsectとなっていますね。
ちなみに、どう見ても足が4本しかないという蝶も多いようですが、そういう蝶は6本のうちの2本が退化してしまってほとんど見えないのだそうです。
逆に、脚が8本あるクモはどうでしょう。
