finger は指じゃない

「finger は指じゃない」ということで、「finger が指じゃなかったらなんなんだよ」と言われそうですが、ま、ちょっと英英辞典を見てみましょう。

指ではないものもある

not including your thumb とありますから、finger はどんな指についても使えるわけではなさそうです。

そしてコウビルド英英辞典には the four long thin parts とも書かれています。

つまり、thumb 以外の4本の指のことを finger といいます。

よく知っている単語も英英辞典で見てみると意外な発見があるものですね。

そこで、手を見てみれば、thumb がどの指のことなのかわかりますね。
