映画「猿の惑星」は本当にインパクトありますよね。
Planet of the Apes（猿の惑星）で出てきたのでご存知の単語ですね。
猿の惑星の創世記みたいな映画もありましたが、最近は本当にあんなことが起きてしまうのではないかって思ってしまうほどです。
ところで、先に「猿の惑星」というタイトルを聞いていると「なんで monkey ではないんだろう？」と思うかもしれません。
ということで、今日はその違いについて英英辞典でみてみましょう。
あと、なんと英英辞典には「猿の惑星」がちゃんと出ていたのでそれもあわせて・・・。
まずは ape のおさらいから。

でしたね。類人猿です。
猿のようだけれどしっぽがない。
もうこの時点で、ape は monkey ではないということになります。
コウビルド英英辞典では次のように出ていました。
Apes are chimpanzees, gorillas, and other animals in the same family.

チンパンジーやゴリラなどのことを ape というのですね。
考えてみれば、「猿の惑星」に出てきたのも、猿というよりはチンパンジーでした。

木の上に登って渋柿をカニに向かって投げつけるサルです。
