今日は簡単です。

まずは中国の首都であると・・・。
で、英語では以前Pekingと呼ばれており、この名前は今でも時々使われる。
ま、簡単ですね。
これはBeijing（北京）のことです。

コウビルド英英辞典の文章で目立つのは、北京が中国第2の都市と書かれているところでしょうか。
でもちょっとデータが古いようで、今は北京がトップです（上海が2位）。
PekingからBeijing
ところで、なぜPekingからBeijingに変わっていったのかは、ネットで検索すると結構な情報が出てきます。
最近はBeijingと書く流れになっているそうですが、それでも例えば北京原人は Peking Man、北京ダックはPeking Duckだそうです。
北京といえば大気汚染。
モンゴルに行ったときに北京で飛行機を乗り継いだのですが、空港から見える景色は全体的に黄色っぽくてよく見えなかったという記憶があります。
黄砂は自然現象だから仕方ないのかもしれませんが、大気汚染はなんとかしてほしいところです。
