AIとは

ここ数年ですっかり身近になったAI。

ChatGPTに代表されるような生成AIを使わない日はほとんどないのではないかと思いますし、テレビでニュースを読み上げるのもAIというのが珍しくなくなりました。

この AI は何の略なのか、英英辞典で見てみましょう。

abbreviation は、このコーナーでは必ず出てくる単語です。
「〜〜の略」という意味でしたね。

ですから、AIというのは artificial intelligence の略ということになります。

artificial というのは、普段、メルマガでは取り上げないような単語ですので、ちょっと英英辞典を見てみましょう。

ふむ、リアルじゃなかったり、自然にできたものではないのですね。
でも、リアルっぽい。

これは「人工の」ということです。
「自然の」の反対ですね。

intelligence はもちろん「知能」ですから、AIというのは「人工知能」ということになります。

insemination とは？

ところで、コウビルド英英辞典には artificial insemination というのも出てきました。
これもAIなのですが、人工知能のことではないですよね。

spermというのは精子のことです。

これを女性の体内にいれるというのですから、これは「受精」のことです。

そしてそれを人工的に行うのですから、artificial insemination というのは「人工授精」のことになります。
