同じように先が尖っていますが

私は普段ほとんど使うことはないのですが、釘と針って英英辞典の説明文で見たら似ているような感じがしませんか？

少なくとも「先が尖っている」というところは同じような気がします。

ということでちょっと英英辞典を見てみましょう。

まずは釘から

a thin pointed piece of metal with a flat top, which you hit into a surface with a hammer, for example to join things together or to hang something on

たしかに先が尖っていますが、もう一方は flat なのですね。
言われてみればそうだ・・・。

で、どんなふうに使うかというとハンマーで叩くわけです。

それでは針は？

では、同じように先が尖っている「針」はどんな感じでしょうか。

a small thin piece of steel, with a point at one end and a hole in the other, used for sewing

A needle is a small, very thin piece of polished metal which is used for sewing. It has a sharp point at one end and a hole in the other for a thread to go through.

先は尖っているけれども、使い道が違います。

そして、もう片方には穴が空いています。
もちろん糸を通すためですね。

ということで、針はもちろん「縫い物」「刺繍」に使うものです。
釘とは全然違います。

共通するのは、使っていると必ず指先を傷つけることです・・・。
