ill と sick の違い

押し入れを片付けていたら、OXFORD POCKET BASIC ENGLISH USAGE という本が出てきました。

単語の微妙な意味の違いがわかる便利で面白い本なのですが、もう発売していないのか、えらく高い値段がついていますね・・・。

ま、それはともかく、その中から ill と sick の違いを見てみようと思います。

もちろん病気ということですが・・。

Ill means ‘unwell’.

そりゃそうですね。とりあえず最初に出てくるのはこれでしょう。

次。

We can use be sick (in British English) to mean ‘bring food up from the stomach’. If you feel sick, you want to do this.
In American English be sick means ‘be ill’.

イギリス英語だと「食べ物が胃から～～あわわわっ」ということで、吐き気がするということなのですね。

ここで一つだけ小難しい単語を出しておきましょう。

the feeling that you have when you think you are going to vomit (=bring food up from your stomach through your mouth)

これも同じ意味ですね。

大人になると吐き気をもよおしてしまうのは、食べ物にあたったとか、何か重い病気になったときよりも、これが原因のことの方が多いかもしれません。

a pain in your head and a feeling of sickness that you get the day after you have drunk too much alcohol

If someone wakes up with a hangover, they feel sick and have a headache because they have drunk a lot of alcohol the night before.

飲み過ぎには気をつけましょうね。
