森と林の違い

森と林の区別ってそれほど厳密なものじゃなくて、例えば山と丘と同じように、まぁどっちかといえば森かな・・っていうようなものだと思いますが、まずは英英辞典で森を見てみましょう。

木がたくさんある広い土地が森ですね。

英英辞典には、さらに see also wood とありました。

素直に見てみましょう。

もちろん、これはいわゆる「木」ですね。

これが「林」ですね。

COBUILD の説明文にも出ているとおり、アメリカ英語では woods と複数形になります。

森と林を分ける広さの境界線がどこにあるのかはわかりませんが、向こう側が見えないくらいの広さ、女型の巨人をとらえたくらいの感じだったら場所だったらやっぱり森ですかねぇ。
