さて、例によってこのコーナーの説明文はちょっとボリュームがありますが「これは誰のことでしょう」をやってみましょう。
難しいところは飛ばしちゃっても大丈夫です。
これは誰のことでしょう？
an Italian astronomer (=a scientist who studies the stars), mathematician, and physicist whose many discoveries had a great influence on modern science. He saw mountains and craters (=round holes) on the surface of the Moon, and his study of the changes in the appearance of Venus proved that it was moving around the Sun. He also discovered that if you drop objects of different weights in a vacuum, they fall at the same speed. He was punished by the inquisition (=a Roman Catholic organization that punished people who had unacceptable religious beliefs) because he believed that the Sun, not the Earth, was the centre of the universe.

ざっくり読んでみると、まずはイタリアのastronomer、mathematician、physicistで、現代科学に大きな影響を与える発見をたくさんしたとあります。
で、彼は月の表面に山やクレーターを見たのですね。
そして、彼の研究・・・どんな研究かというと金星の外観の変化・・・それが太陽の周りを金星が動いていることを証明した。
・・・ふぅ、長いですね。まぁ、もう少し読んでみましょう。
そしてまた、彼は発見しました。何を発見したかというと、異なる重さのものを真空中で落としたとき、同じ速度で落ちるということ。
最後に、彼はinquisitionによって罰せられました。なぜかというと、彼は太陽が宇宙の中心であると（地球ではなく）信じていたので。
ということで、これはガリレオ・ガリレイのことですね。

こちらでもmathematician, astronomer, and physicistという形で、先ほど訳さなかった単語が出てきました。
順に、数学者、天文学者、物理学者です。
そして、ロングマン英英辞典の英文で訳さなかったinquisitionですが、これはカッコ内で説明が書かれています。カッコ内の説明文が何だったかというと・・・

ローマのカトリック組織で、人々を罰したのですね。
どんな人々を罰したのかというと、それがwho以下に書かれています。
受け入れがたい宗教的信念を持った人々・・・要するに、カトリックにとって都合の悪い信念を持っている人たちを罰する組織ということで、まぁ異端審問ということになります。
ガリレオの場合は、カトリックが信じていた「地球が宇宙の中心である」という考えに反し、太陽が宇宙の中心であると主張したので罰せられたのですね。
望遠鏡を作ったり、振り子時計を考え出したり、歴史に名前を残す偉業を成し遂げた偉大な科学者の一人ですね。
