家族という単語ですぐに思いつくのはやっぱりファミリーです。

大抵は、親と子からなる（いわゆる）家族を指しますが、例えば非常に仲の良いグループのことを表すときにも使いますね。
「欽ちゃんファミリー」とかいうときですね（ふるっ）。
ですので、一緒に住んでいることよりも、何かでつながっているひとまとまりの人たち・・という感じです。
ところで、household なんていう単語もあります。

こちらは、一つの家に住んでいる人たち全体を指します。
例えば召使いや執事なども含まれます。
そして、the Household といったときには「王室」という意味にもなります。
ですので、宮内庁は Imperial Household Agency となります。
